What’s Auto Super Resolution on Windows 11, and how do I enable it?

  • To enable Auto Super Resolution on Windows 11, open Settings > Display > Graphics and turn on “Automatic super resolution.”
  • To turn Auto SR on for a specific game, open Settings > Display > Graphics, select the game’s “.exe” file, and select the “On” or “On (keep current desktop resolution)” option.
  • Auto SR uses on-device AI to upscale supported games for higher frame rates and better image quality.

UPDATE 6/11/2024: Windows 11 has an AI feature known as “Auto Super Resolution” (Auto SR), which is designed to enhance the gaming experience by making supported games play more smoothly with improved details. In this guide, I will explain what Auto SR is, the hardware requirements, and the steps to enable or disable the AI feature on your computer.

What is Auto Super Resolution on Windows 11?

Auto Super Resolution (Auto SR) is a feature that uses AI to increase game resolution and visual quality, providing a smoother, more efficient experience that scales across hardware, including better frame rates.

On Windows 11 24H2 and higher releases, the feature is similar to NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution, AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, and Intel XeSS. The difference is that Auto SR upscales games automatically using the NPU (Neural Processing Unit), not the GPU (Graphic Processing Unit), so developers don’t have to spend time updating their games.

What are Auto SR requirements?

Auto SR is currently an exclusive feature for Copilot+ PCs with these hardware requirements:

  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite.
  • NPU: 40+ TOPS.
  • RAM: 16GB (or more).
  • Hard drive: 256GB (or larger).
  • Graphics: Compatible with DirectX 11 or 12.
  • Display resolution: 1920 x 1080 (1080p) or higher.
  • OS: Windows 11 24H2 or higher.
  • Package: Auto Super Resolution (Microsoft Store download).

What games support Auto SR?

Auto Super Resolution only works for certain games. Initially, the feature will work with Borderlands 3, Control (DX11), Dark Souls III, God of War, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, Sekiro Shadows Die Twice, Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2, and The Witcher 3.

You can check if other games support the AI upscaling feature on this Microsoft website.

What’s the difference between Auto SR and Super Resolution (SR)?

Auto Super Resolution is Microsoft’s upscaling feature that works automatically on games. On the other hand, Super Resolution (SR) defines the upscaling features from Intel, AMD, and Nvidia that developers must implement manually in the games.

However, the company also created “DirectSR” in partnership with Intel, Nvidia, and AMD, which is a set of APIs that allows developers to use a single code path to implement the Super Resolution technologies (DLSS Super Resolution, FidelityFX Super Resolution, and XeSS) into their games instead of integrating each technology separately.

In this guide, I will teach you the steps to enable the Auto SR feature on Windows 11.

Enable Auto Super Resolution globally on Windows 11

To enable the Auto Super Resolution feature on Windows 11 24H2, use these steps:

  1. Open Settings on Windows 11.

  2. Click on System.

  3. Click the Display page.

  4. Click the Graphics setting.

  5. Turn on the “Automatic super resolution” toggle switch.

After you complete the steps, the AI upscaling feature will turn on the computer.

You will know that it’s working because a toast notification will appear with the “Good news, your game is enhanced by AI-powered auto super resolution. You can change this anytime in Settings” message.

Enable Auto Super Resolution per game on Windows 11

To enable the Windows 11 Auto SR on a specific game, use these steps:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Click on System.

  3. Click the Display page.

  4. Click the Graphics setting.

  5. Choose the game’s “.exe” file or the game itself under the “Custom settings for applications” section.

  6. (Option 1) Select the “On” option in the “Automatic super resolution” setting to upscale the game using AI automatically. However, this might result in some resolution alteration when switching to another app again.

  7. (Option 2) Select the “On (keep current desktop resolution)” option in the “Automatic super resolution” setting to upscale the game, but it will require manual adjustment. However, this option won’t cause resolution problems. This option doesn’t conflict with the game’s resolution settings.

After you complete the steps, the AI upscaling feature will be enabled on the specified game. However, if the game isn’t supported, the experience may have some unexpected results.

Other AI features

Auto Super Resolution is only one of the many AI features that Microsoft is planning to make available as part of Windows 11 24H2 during the second half of 2024. The software giant will also roll out a new Timeline feature known as Recall, allowing you to scroll back in time through anything you have done on your computer.

Other AI-powered features include Live Captions with live translations for videos and calls, Windows Studio Effects to enhance video calls and audio quality using the NPU, Voice Clarity, Cocreator for Pait, and Restyle Image for Photos.

Update June 11, 2024: This guide has been updated to ensure accuracy and reflect new details about the feature.
